El Salvador Surf Guide

When’s the best time to visit?

El Salvador offers world-class surf all year round, with consistent swells rolling in from the South Pacific—so there’s really no bad time to come.

If you’re chasing bigger, more powerful waves, the prime season runs from spring through fall. Thanks to the country’s south-facing coastline, it receives clean south and southwest swells at the perfect angle, creating long, well-shaped point breaks and fun, punchy beach breaks.

During these months, conditions can line up for truly unforgettable sessions—don’t be surprised if you score waves that get your adrenaline going.

What’s the weather like?

El Salvador has a tropical climate, with a dry, cooler season from November to April and a warm, rainy season from May to October.

The beaches are warm and sunny year-round, while the mountainous areas offer a cooler, refreshing escape. Temperatures peak in March and April, at the end of the dry season, when rainfall is at its lowest.

May to September are the wettest months and also bring the best waves for surfing.

During the rainy season, showers along the coast usually happen in the late afternoon or at night, so you won’t miss your surf sessions.

EL SUNZAL

El Sunzal is a soft, rolling point break known for its long, smooth walls—perfect for longboarding and learning to surf. It’s suitable for most skill levels and offers incredibly long rides.

During larger swells, however, the wave becomes heavier, so extra caution is recommended.

EL ZONTE

El Zonte is one of the best spots to learn how to stand up on a surfboard, thanks to its consistent white water. Intermediate and advanced surfers will also enjoy its short but fun right and left waves.

This break works well in almost all conditions and offers stunning coastal views. Surrounded by cliffs and mountains, El Zonte delivers both great waves and an unforgettable setting.

LA BOCANA

A local favorite, La Bocana is considered one of the best left-hand waves in El Salvador. Formed by a river mouth, it produces long, hollow lefts and shorter, powerful rights.

It requires a solid swell and higher tides to truly shine. The takeoff is fast and the wave becomes hollow and intense as it approaches the shallow, rocky inside. Best suited for advanced surfers.

LAS FLORES

PUNTA MANGO

K59 & K61

Las Flores is a highly consistent right point break known for its long, mechanical waves. At low tide, it offers a hollow takeoff, with rides reaching up to 300 meters.

On bigger days, it becomes a powerful and demanding wave for experienced surfers, often compared to world-class breaks. On smaller days, it transforms into a softer, more forgiving wave with long open faces—ideal for a classic surf experience.

Punta Mango is a true world-class wave and one of El Salvador’s hidden gems. This powerful right-hand point break is best suited for advanced surfers due to strong currents and shallow rocks, even on smaller days.

Access is only possible by boat or 4WD, adding to its remote and exclusive feel.

K59 is one of the best right-hand cobblestone point breaks in El Salvador, offering clean and consistent waves in a more laid-back setting.

A short walk away, K61 provides a slightly more challenging wave, also breaking over cobblestones.

Both spots are surrounded by stunning mountain views, making the experience just as memorable out of the water as in it.
